In 1944 these revelers - from Cascais - certainly had concerns with the war, but they still celebrated Carnival.
War had raged around the world for five years, but Portugal was being spared.
They didn't know it yet, but in that year of 1944 they would witness the landings in Normandy, the liberation of Paris and part of the Netherlands and a last effort by the Nazis to regain ground.
Just over a year later the war ended, first in Europe and then in the Pacific.
