Memorial commemorating the resistance fighters executed in Arras, France.
There may have been thousands of Portuguese fighting the Germans during World War II as part of regular and irregular French forces.
It is known that the mobile battalions, formed in the first months of the war, included many Portuguese who were in the country as immigrants or were their descendants. A smaller number served in the Foreign Legion.
After the Nazi occupation, we find Portuguese men and women among the various resistance movements.
The stories of these people, as well as the memories of those born in the French colony in Portugal, will unfold in this chapter of Portugal 1939–1945.
