Someone was certainly encouraging her, encouraging laughter... perhaps one of her parents or grandparents. Maybe all at once.

On the back of the photograph someone wrote that this smiling Maria was photographed on May 3, 1942, in her grandparents' backyard, in Oporto.

It was a Sunday.

Perhaps the photo was taken after mass or a family lunch. Maybe even in the morning.

Maria was, of course, the center of attention... any child this age is.

If it wasn't a sunny day, it was at least pleasant. So much so that the family spent time in the backyard, on Campo Lindo Street, photographing a very happy Maria.
