The Portuguese authorities received the information about the disappearance of Alberto Nogueira in January 1941, but the sailor's fate was unknown since the middle of the previous year when the ship he was on was torpedoed.

Alberto Nogueira was a crew member of the Swedish steamer Hedrun, sunk by the U-48 on August 16, 1940. The freighter was part of convoy OB.197 when it was hit by a torpedo fired by the U-48. It sank in three minutes, taking with it the captain, his wife and five crew members.

Carlos Guerreiro
