António Gomes was one of the civilian victims of a cycle of Allied bombings over the Rouen area, in Normandy, France, which would become known as the Red Week in May/June 1944.

During that week, which began on May 30 and ended on June 5, hundreds of British and American bombers tried to destroy bridges, viaducts, train lines and other infrastructure in preparation for the Allied landing on June 6, 1944.

In this week alone, between 400 and 500 civilians died in that French part of the country.
