António Lima disappeared with 25 other men when his ship - the Panamanian  Pillory - was sunk by U-539 off Puerto Rico on June 5, 1944. He was a stoker on board.

Aboard the same ship were also the Portuguese António S. de Carvalho, José Agostinho, Manuel Ferreira and José Rodriguez Pimenta.

The American authorities warned the Portuguese on June 15, 1944.

His widow, Maria da Gulocia Reir, lived in Faial da Terra, São Miguel island, in the Azores.

The vessel flew a Panamanian flag, but was operated by the Danish Ship Operating Co, in service of the US and based in New York.
