Manuel Ferreira, a fireman, was one of 25 missing from the ship Pillory when it was sunk by U-539 off Puerto Rico on June 5, 1944.
Aboard the same ship were also the Portuguese António S. de Carvalho, José Agostinho, António de S. Lima and José Rodriguez Pimenta.
Information about the disappearance was sent by the American authorities to the Portuguese on June 15, 1944.
His widow Maria Preciosa, lived in Calçada do Tojal, Carve.
The vessel flew a Panamanian flag, but was operated by the Danish Ship Operating Co, based in New York.
