Zacharias Neves disappeared when he was aboard the William S. Thayer, where he worked as an oiler. 

On April 30, 1944, the ship - part of a convoy - was sunk by torpedoes fired by U-307 south of Bear Island, in the Barents Sea.

The Americans warned the Portuguese authorities about the disappearance of Neves on May 19, 1944.

He was married to Felismena (Felismina ?) Neves and lived on Rua Nova, in Ílhavo, in the municipality of Aveiro, Portugal.

The ship was American and belonged to the A. L. Burbank and Company, Ltd, of New York.
