António de Carvalho was one of 25 missing when the ship Pillory was sunk by U-539 off Puerto Rico on June 5, 1944.
Aboard the same ship were also the Portuguese José Agostinho, António de S. Lima, Manuel Ferreira and José Rodriguez Pimenta who also disappeared.
The American authorities warned the Portuguese about the events on June 15, 1944.
His widow Rosa Fidalga was living in Figueira da Foz, Portugal.
The vessel flew a Panamanian flag and was operated by the Danish Ship Operating Co, based in New York.
