The Portuguese steamer "Angola" was traveling between the island of São Tomé and Funchal, in Madeira, when, on November 19, 1943, it was intercepted by "U-103", a German submarine that requested the Portuguese captain - Nazareth Cardoso - to take in one of the men from the garrison, who had fallen ill with tuberculosis.

While the patient's transfer operation was taking place, which hapenned under light showers, an Italian consul, traveling on the Portuguese ship, collected around 3500 cigarettes which he offered to the German sailors. The packs were gathered among the passengers and purchased at the ships shop.

One of the u-boat officers wrote a note in the "Angola's" navigation log thanking him for his availability to receive the patient:

"A big thank you for the excellent reception and assistance to our sick comrade"

At sea on 19.11.43

A lieutenant's signature also illegible

Unlike other events recorded in the Navigation Diary, the times and coordinates of this meeting were not registered. Nazareth Cardoso knew that he could be stopped by Allied patrols at any time and preferred not to write down a information that could give his approximate location.

The patient was left in Funchal, Madeira island, where the ship arrived days later.

The ebony wood box offered to Captain Nazareth Cardoso by the German Navy
(Photo: Thanks to Eduardo Melo)

The first time I had a clue about this event was in January 2013 when I was contacted by Eduardo Melo, nephew of Nazareth Cardoso. He was the guardian of an ebony wooden box, given to his uncle by the German authorities, with a silver plaque engraved with a thank you:

To the Cdte. Nazareth Cardoso
in recognition
for your humanitarian act
On 11/19/1943
The German Navy

Nazareth Cardoso died during the Second World War and for this reason his nephew Eduardo Melo had no idea what had happened. Only after some research was it possible to understand the reason for the offer.

Unfortunately, Eduardo Melo passed away and I don't know the fate of the box.

The "Angola" and Commander Nazareth Cardoso also saved crew members from the British ship "Wray Castle" during World War II.
