Arnaldo Gonçalves de Freitas, a native of Madeira Island, was born in the town of São Martinho, Funchal on 25 November 1914. After joining his father, Feliciano, who was already living in the United States, Arnaldo entered military service, being recruited on 16 November 1942. He was never sent to combat, remaining in the USA where he served as a "Warrant Officer".
He married Elizabeth Fernandes, with whom he had a son (Arnold Gonzales, who fought in Vietnam) and a daughter. Arnaldo de Freitas also had a brother, named Joseph Gonçalves de Freitas, also enlisted in the US Army forces and fought from the Normandy landings until the final days of the Third Reich.
Arnaldo died on November 22, 1986.
