José Agostinho was one of the 25 missing from the ship Pillory when it was sunk by U-539 off Puerto Rico on June 5, 1944.
Aboard the same ship were the Portuguese António de S. Carvalho, António de S. Lima, Manuel Ferreira and José Rodriguez Pimenta who also went missing.
The American authorities warned the Portuguese about the events on June 15, 1944.
His widow Lúcia Ferreira lived in Costa Nova, Ílhavo.
The vessel flew a Panamanian flag, but was operated by the Danish Ship Operating Co, on service of the USA and based in New York.
