Joseph Fonseca (55 years old), his wife Osyth (46 years old) and their son Paul (10 years old) died on September 24, 1940, victims of German air attacks – the Blitz – which targeted British cities since the beginning of that month.
The family residence was in Uxbridge Road.
They are all buried in the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith, with 469 other civilian victims of the Blitz that caused more than 40,000 deaths among residents of several British cities.
The German attacks on the United Kingdom – in what would become known as the Battle of Britain – began on July 10, 1940 with strikes on targets of military interest, but from September 7, Luftwaffe planes diverted their attention to several cities.
The “Blitz” lasted until May 1941, when Nazi objectives turned towards Russia.
