The accident probably happened because of the bad weather that forced the crew to make an emergency landing in Sintra.

The aircraft had been bought by Portugal to the UK trough the program OATMEAL, that included the acquisition of many aircraft for the army and the navy.

The program was part of the negotiations related with the renting of the Lagens base, in the Azores.
