They were on the way to join 22 Sqn in the Middle East. They landed in a beach near Caparica and the aircraft was completely burned by the crew. On the same afternoon they were escorted to Lisbon where they met the air attaché assistant. He took them to the Portuguese International Police (PVDE). They went to the Suissse Atlântico Hotel and received civilian clothes, making some journeys through the city. They returned to England in a civilian BOAC Flight on April 11. Davis and Dennis went missing in combat on April 3, 1942, as members of 217 Sqn. They are remembered in the Malta Memorial.
